One of Darlington Borough Council’s flagship town centre schemes delivered through its partnership with Cityheart, the centre will help address growing demand for science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills. It will create clear pathways into high-value careers while supporting employers across the Tees Valley and North East.

Located within Darlington’s Central Park innovation district alongside organisations including Teesside University, CPI and Innovation Central, the facility will provide specialist STEM teaching and learning spaces, including science laboratories, data science and immersive learning facilities, alongside a flexible 200-seat lecture theatre designed to support education, industry engagement and community events. Once completed, the centre will be operated by Darlington College, which was instrumental in developing the original concept and business case.

The planning application has been submitted following extensive collaboration between Cityheart, Darlington Borough Council, Darlington College and industry stakeholders to develop a facility that responds directly to local skills needs and supports the continued growth of Darlington’s innovation economy. The wider project team includes Space Architects, Identity Consult, engineers BGP and TGA, planning consultants ELG Planning, and landscape architects OOBE. The scheme is being funded through the government’s Growth Mission Fund and Pride in Place.

The project forms part of a wider programme of investment and regeneration across Darlington and will further strengthen Central Park’s position as a leading hub for education, research, innovation and enterprise. A planning determination date is expected before the end of 2026.
