Project Description

This 4,000m² Magistrates Court in Caernarfon, North Wales houses a Magistrates’ Court, two Crown Courts and one Youth Court, in addition there is also a Welsh language unit and a range of back office and administration facilities.

It is a two-storey double height court complex with a three-storey block of ancillary accommodation wrapped around the court rooms. The accommodation includes a Crown Court, Magistrates’ Court and multi-purpose room. HOK obtained the planning and executive architects, Austin-Smith:Lord carried out the detail design and implementation of this new BREEAM Excellent purpose built court.

The external works to the Criminal Justice Centre provides a strong Civic setting for the new building using a series of low retaining walls in local slate, and materials complementary to the building, alongside a strong architectural planting scheme.

Against stiff opposition, Cityheart won, the initial tender to develop, fund and construct the £17 million building, which was funded by London & Capital with the lease held by Her Majesty’s Court Service on a 25 year lease.
